New York City's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, will opt to live in the historic Gracie Mansion, departing from the rent-stabilised apartment that sparked debate throughout his campaign.

A Historic Residence

Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the official residence for nearly all New York City mayors after the World War II era.

However, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a core issue, hesitated to declare his residency plans right away after his victory in November.

"The choice rested on keeping my family safe and the imperative to directing my full attention on implementing the affordability agenda New Yorkers voted for," Mamdani said in his announcement.

Thanking a Neighborhood

He resided in the Astoria neighbourhood, an area renowned for its vibrant immigrant communities and international dining.

"To the people of Astoria: thank you for demonstrating the best of New York City," Mamdani's statement said.

"While I may no longer live in Astoria, it will always live within me and my work," he said.

A Contentious Issue

During his election campaign, Mamdani connected his central policy – halting rent increases – to his personal living arrangements.

However his opponents, including ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for remaining in the apartment even though he hails from a famous family.

Previous Exceptions

Some mayors have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, chose to live in his own townhouse on Manhattan's Upper East Side during his three terms, which ended in 2012.

Instead, Bloomberg argued it ought to be a venue for civic gatherings, and championed an extensive renovation of the historic mansion.

A Vastly Different Setting

As he settles into Gracie Mansion near his first day on 1 January, he will find himself in surroundings very different than his modest Astoria apartment.

Featuring pale yellow exterior, emerald shutters, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home with views of the East River.

Inside, the ground floor of the historically styled mansion is decorated consistent with the home's historical period.

The estate, which is said to has several bedrooms, also includes fortified protections to safeguard the mayor and his family.

Ghostly Tales

Past occupants have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.

Chirlane McCray, the wife of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, told reporters that they experienced doors opening and shutting on their own, and the floors emitted odd sounds.

The departing mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "It doesn't matter the skeptics say," he insisted in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."

Affordable Housing Lifeline

His former home is rent-stabilized, meaning the city imposes caps on how much property owners can increase rent each year.

Tenants consider these apartments essential protections as the price of rent exceeds the means of many residents.

Records showed Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.

According to real estate analysts Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
