UN:Me: A Cerebral Horror Merging Silent Hill and Social Deduction Gameplay

The latest Day of the Devs digital showcase unveiled a number of fascinating future games, but one in particular has captured attention: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo experience seems to blend the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill title with the paranoid deduction heart of Among Us.

"This is a distinctive game where a young woman containing multiple personalities within her must escape from a labyrinth of the psyche," states developer Yasukazu Kawai.

Entering a Fractured Mind

In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed heroine who appears to be of high school age. Within her reside four distinct personas, all possessing unique fears and motivations. These souls can seize control at will, unleashing their innermost terrors upon her suddenly.

Based on showcased gameplay, much of the action takes place within a creepy medical facility, though additional clips depict the protagonist navigating a abandoned church.

An Environment of Individual Horror

"What are you fearful of? What makes you uneasy?" asks game director Shun Sasaki. "High places. Confined spaces. Authority figures. Elements that appear minor to other people can activate a deep instinct inside us. This game explores that concept — fears that are specific to every individual."

The core mechanic involves controlling the persona that emerges at a particular moment. However, these identities will change involuntarily during gameplay. During exploration, each soul's fears become exaggerated and assault the protagonist one after another. As the persona shifts, so does the specific fear the player encounters.

Unsettling Visuals and a Deadly Decision

Initially, UN:Me shares striking visual similarities with the Silent Hill franchise. The setting is filled with orderlies who all share the identical visage, with unnervingly wide grins. Figures in the waiting room have large blooms growing from their necks should be. Floral motifs are a recurring theme, contrasting organic elegance with unnatural horror.

Yet, UN:Me introduces a singular twist. Players must determine which of the four entities haunting the heroine is the "real" one. "Each of the souls asserts that the physical form belongs to them," explains a creator. "Throughout the game, you must determine who is authentic."

Once players have deduced a persona is fake, they must eliminate it. But, since every entity can lie or obfuscate the truth, it is incredibly simple to choose incorrectly.

"Perhaps you've already eliminated the true [soul] with your own hands," the narration states. "The last one remaining could be a fake. In any case, your choices are irreversible."

UN:Me does not yet have a confirmed launch window, but it is available to wishlist on platforms.
