Top-Flight Updates: Hannibal Banned for Misconduct; Guardiola Says 'Back Line Must Improve'

From the world of Premier League developments, a key midfielder has been given a significant suspension, a manager has pointed to a player's mistakes to prove a point, and Pep Guardiola has demanded backline improvements following a chaotic victory.

Mejbri Handed Four-Match Ban and Financial Penalty

Burnley's midfielder Hannibal Mejbri has been given a four-game ban and a £15,000 penalty for improper behaviour during a recent fixture against Leeds United. The Football Association said the player faced a separate regulatory commission following an incident of spitting towards visiting supporters around the 67th point during a 2-0 victory for Burnley.

An FA release said: “An independent Regulatory Commission has sanctioned the Hannibal Mejbri for his actions during the top-flight game against Leeds of 18 October. It was alleged that he acted against the laws of the game or in a poor way by using abusive and/or indecent conduct through spitting towards the direction of Leeds United fans.”

The statement continued, “Mejbri later admitted the charge, with the Regulatory Commission handing down a four-match suspension and a fine following a hearing. The panel's full explanation for the sanction are to be released at a later date.” The team, now 19th in the table, travel to 12th-placed Newcastle this Saturday.

Maresca Singles Out Adarabioyo's Errors to Prove a Point

The Blues' manager Enzo Maresca has stated that not having seasoned players is not a problem at team, pointing out that defender Tosin Adarabioyo's age did not stop him from playing poorly in a 3-1 loss against Leeds United.

Maresca, who oversees the most youthful team in the Premier League, rejected the idea that mentality was a factor in the setback. He made his case by criticising Tosin, Chelsea's most experienced outfield player in the lineup, after he delivered an error-strewn display in central defence.

“We always talk about experience when we drop points,” Maresca said. “When we defeated Barcelona, the draw against Arsenal, nobody was mentioning experienced personnel. I know that when we don’t win, we are constantly searching for an explanation, but in my view the reason why we lost against Leeds was not down to inexperience, it’s because we just weren't at our best.”

Maresca continued, “Who is the most senior player for us in the match? Who was? Did he play any good? Therefore, it isn't related to his age. It's that those 11 players, they were not good enough.”

Guardiola Says Defence 'Must Improve'

The Manchester City manager has stated the champions have taken lessons from their midweek thriller at Fulham and the game is now forgotten. The team survived to claim a 5-4 win during a remarkable clash at Craven Cottage, having led 5-1 with about 60 minutes played.

Coming after they resisted a Leeds fightback to win 3-2 in the prior fixture, prompting further doubts about whether they are the defensive steel required to mount a challenge against pace-setters Arsenal. “That game is behind us,” he said. “Good learnings, I hope. In the Premier League, at all the clubs, one must take onboard what happens performances and bad things and think of what's next.”

“Of course I’m concerned,” he admitted. “We try to analyse the cause, so as not to concede so many goals. With the three goals against Leeds, and the five goals against Fulham you can see our sides, right? So, we have we have done many positive things. But the number of attempts had Leeds ? Three? Scored two. It’s not bad. How many shots on target for Fulham have? Five, six? So the average of chances conceded is is high. We have to improve.”

Newcastle Prioritise New Livramento and Botman Deals

The Magpies' recently appointed sporting director, Ross Wilson, has made new deal negotiations involving key backline players Tino Livramento and Sven Botman the priority on his agenda for the club. Wilson arrived from Nottingham Forest in October and was pleased that playmaker Sandro Tonali is on a contract extending until 2029 and, potentially, 2030.

This allows Wilson to prioritise talks with Livramento and Botman's representatives. With the former’s current deal ending in 2027 and the latter’s a year later, Newcastle's efforts are being treated with some importance.

“The initial three or four days after starting was when I found that Sandro’s deal is much more secure than the one I was expecting,” said Wilson. “But it’s well known that the club would want to extend Tino’s deal and we would want to renew Sven Botman’s as well. These talks are underway.”

Manager Eddie Howe will be missing Botman for the match against Burnley on Saturday, and he likely to remain sidelined for a further period.

Nuno Confirms Paquetá Will Start for West Ham

The Hammers' manager Nuno Espírito Santo has stated that Lucas Paquetá will return to the starting lineup when the side face Brighton on Sunday, having completed his suspension following a sending-off he received Liverpool.

“It is in the past,” the manager remarked. “I am confident it will not happen again as he personally acknowledged the error. We spoke in the dressing room. I am positive it is over and it will not happen again.”

He also understands the intense strain facing his team, currently 18th ahead of Saturday's fixtures. “We cannot ignore it,” he admitted. “It is a reality. We must confront it. We are fighting for survival. We cannot shy away from it.”

6. Arteta Impressed by No 9 Stand-in Merino

The Spanish midfielder may keep his place as Arsenal’s central striker despite the club's usual strikers are fit again. The midfielder has been playing as an emergency No 9 because of fitness issues for Viktor Gyokeres, Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus.

He scored Arsenal’s first goal against Brentford before assisting Bukayo Saka for their second goal in a 2-0 win which preserved {their|
