TikTok Reportedly Directs Children's Profiles to Explicit Material In Just a Few Taps

As reported by a recent investigation, TikTok has been discovered to direct profiles of minors to adult videos in just a couple of steps.

Testing Approach

Global Witness established test accounts using a 13-year-old's birth date and enabled the platform's content restriction feature, which is intended to reduce exposure to inappropriate content.

Investigators found that TikTok proposed sexually charged search terms to multiple test profiles that were established on new devices with no prior browsing data.

Troubling Search Prompts

Search phrases proposed under the "recommended for you" feature featured "very very rude skimpy outfits" and "explicit content featuring women" – and then advanced to keywords such as "graphic sexual content".

For three of the accounts, the adult-oriented recommendations were recommended right away.

Fast Track to Adult Material

Within minimal interaction, the investigators found pornographic content including revealing content to explicit intercourse.

The organization stated that the content sought to avoid detection, usually by displaying the clip within an harmless image or video.

Regarding one profile, the method took two interactions after logging on: one interaction on the search feature and then another on the suggested search.

Legal Framework

The climate organization, whose remit includes examining big tech's impact on public safety, reported performing multiple testing phases.

One set occurred prior to the enforcement of minor safety measures under the United Kingdom's digital protection law on 25 July, and a second set following the regulations took effect.

Serious Findings

The organization noted that two videos included someone who seemed to be a minor and had been sent to the child protection organization, which oversees harmful material involving minors.

The campaign group alleged that the video platform was in breach of the UK safety legislation, which mandates social media firms to prevent children from accessing dangerous material such as pornography.

Regulatory Response

A spokesperson for the UK communications regulator, which is tasked with monitoring the law, stated: "We appreciate the work behind this study and will review its findings."

Ofcom's codes for adhering to the act indicate that digital platforms that pose a substantial threat of presenting inappropriate videos must "configure their algorithms to filter out dangerous material from young users' timelines.

TikTok's content guidelines prohibit pornographic content.

Platform Response

The video platform stated that following notification from the organization, it had taken down the offending videos and made changes to its suggestion feature.

"Immediately after notification" of these assertions, we responded quickly to examine the issue, remove content that contravened our rules, and launch improvements to our search prompt functionality," said a spokesperson.
