Thomas Tuchel Seeks Jude Bellingham's Passion Provided The Three Lions' Ace Sets Aside Egotism at the Door.

One snub was enough. Another and it might have appeared spiteful from the England manager, a coach who is far too wily not to understand that securing World Cup glory demands contributions by the talented midfielder, although it is also on the midfielder to blend into the game plans and player rankings necessary with England now that he is returned to the manager's welcoming fold.

Tuchel wants Bellingham's edge, his fire, but it is about channeling it appropriately. Personal talent is important but the squad know from bitter experience that there is a price to pay when celebrity dominates. Still, a point has been made.

The midfielder had plenty to reflect on after his omission of last month’s squad. He watched England book their place at next summer’s World Cup without him. He watched Morgan Rogers excel as a high-pressing attacking midfielder. He heard Tuchel discuss loving the squad's spirit and ethics. Inevitably, he has reacted in champion style, netting important strikes for Real Madrid against Barcelona and Juventus. He had to be picked; another omission would have left his World Cup hopes hanging by a thread.

The hope is that the manager will have a midfielder focused on intimidating opponents instead of his own colleagues. After all, from a tactical perspective, there is little benefit to picking a fight with one of the best players in the world. The ideal scenario is that Bellingham’s time on the sidelines has demonstrated that representing the national team is a valuable, uncertain thing. The coach, on his side, can now offer support around the 22-year-old after showing that he is not afraid to drop big names.

“No issue exists regarding him, and no concern about his personality,” the German commented. “Jude displays that aggression. You need that kind of fire to achieve greatness that he has. Everyone need to help him and build an environment which he can [have] this edge towards opponents and towards the goals we are striving for as a team.”

Bellingham took up most of the attention at the manager's selection reveal for the upcoming dead-rubber qualifiers against one opponent and Albania. Who else? Indeed, how about another talent? This is another prodigious playmaker in need of support and direction. He has not played for England since spring and has found it hard to reach his best recently but the boss could not ignore the 25-year-old after his performance in the Champions League match against the German side this week.

The issue, though, is the best way to deploy the attacking talents at available. Rogers and Eberechi Eze have earned their places and there will be a good argument to select Cole Palmer once he is fit after a persistent groin problem. Is selecting five No 10s to the World Cup be an overkill? Gareth Southgate never found the correct balance at the European Championship. He made concessions by squeezing both stars into the starting lineup, cramping Harry Kane’s style in the process.

It is hard to see the current manager repeating that if it harms the offensive structure. There is room for a single playmaker, with quick attackers on the flanks. Clear roles is beneficial. Bellingham is in as a No 10. The new call-up, selected for the first occasion, is a central midfielder and the recalled Adam Wharton will vie with another player as a No 6. Additionally, there is no position on the wing for Foden, who has to be through the middle. The coach prefers him close to the striker. “It is illogical to ask Phil: ‘You are needed on the pitch but there’s no space on your best position, can you play the left side? Or the right wing?” he stated. “He is to feature in the No 9-10ish position, through the center. I have this vision about him for years. In my view it fits his style best.”

He agreed there are times when Foden has seemed out of sorts in an national jersey. “One senses as if, ‘Does he really enjoy it? And someone of his caliber who has this childish joy to play football, then obviously something is not right, whether it's the position, the setup, I don’t know.

“I think he is also so used to representing his club in a particular setup, with a clear task. I think he profits a lot from clarity. What is my position? In which positions should I turn? When should I to push the tempo? What are my to defend?

Tuchel talked about one star bursting through for tap-ins and Foden netting strikes from outside the box. He said he has a longlist of many candidates. Several players, Myles Lewis-Skelly, James Trafford and Ruben Loftus-Cheek have dropped out. Nico O’Reilly is rewarded for his excellent performances for City at defense. Intrigue is high.

The omission of the striker means there is no like-for-like alternative for the captain in this squad. Interestingly, Tuchel suggested deploying Foden as a false 9 versus Serbia or Albania. Anthony Gordon, the United forward, Bellingham and the winger are other options if he be absent. With qualification secured, this is a moment for testing tactics.

At the same time, it is also a moment to develop Kane’s relationship with his teammate going. It is remarkable that you have to go back to the latter setting up the captain to net in a friendly win versus the Scots in September 2023 to find the sole instance in many appearances for England when the pair linked up for a score. Tuchel will know that the two stars only passed to each other a single time during England’s draws with Denmark and Slovenia at the Euros. The connection is lacking.

“This is where eventually it becomes the responsibility of the individuals,” Tuchel stated. He does not shy away to speak frankly. Remains a feeling of the player under scrutiny. He cannot even be assured to begin versus the upcoming opponents. The manager desires him committed but he will be monitoring him carefully. Set aside self-importance outside. It will make a powerful England team into an superior one.
