An Patriotic Palette and Historic Symbol

The updated livery features a patriotic design to echo the national flag and will be applied on GBR trains, at stations, and across its digital platforms.

Significantly, the emblem is the well-known twin-arrow design presently used by National Rail and first designed in the 1960s for British Rail.

The Implementation Strategy

The implementation of the branding, which was designed by the department, is scheduled to happen over time.

Travellers are set to start spotting the newly-branded trains throughout the UK rail network from spring next year.

During the month of December, the design will be displayed at key stations, such as Birmingham New Street.

The Path to Public Ownership

The Railways Bill, which will pave the way the establishment of GBR, is presently moving through the Parliament.

The administration has argued it is bringing back into public ownership the railways so the system is "owned by the people, delivering for the passengers, not for corporate interests."

GBR will consolidate the operation of passenger trains and infrastructure under a single organisation.

The department has said it will merge seventeen separate organisations and "reduce the frustrating administrative hurdles and accountability gap that continues to plague the railways."

Digital Features and Current Ownership

The rollout of Great British Railways will also involve a new mobile application, which will allow customers to view timetables and book tickets without surcharges.

Accessibility users will also be have the option to use the application to arrange help.

A number of operators had already been taken into public control under the outgoing administration, such as LNER.

There are now 7 train operators already in public hands, representing about a one-third of passenger trips.

In the past year, South Western Railway have been brought into public ownership, with more anticipated to follow in the coming years.

Official and Industry Reaction

"The new design is not simply a new logo," said the relevant minister. It symbolises "a fresh start, casting off the issues of the previous system and dedicated entirely on offering a proper public service."

Rail leaders have welcomed the government's commitment to improving the passenger experience.

"The industry will carry on to work closely with industry partners to support a seamless handover to Great British Railways," a senior figure noted.
