For much of the concluding season of *Stranger Things*, the young Holly Wheeler and Max are imprisoned in a realm of memories forged from the memories of Vecna. Their quest for an escape route in "Escape from Camazotz" forces them to relive a traumatic incident from Henry's childhood—a discovery that could contain the means to overcome him once and for all.

The Discovery in the Tunnel

When she finds Max in the mental landscape called Camazotz, Max reveals she is hiding out in a cave that Henry strangely fears. An accidental discovery a viewing device taken from Henry's old home lets Holly see that the source of fear lies not within the cave. By aligning her view with the shape, she and Max suddenly fall into a subterranean passage.

There, they witness a Henry as a boy encounter an injured and paranoid man. When Henry tries to help, the man panics and shoots, striking Henry in the hand. In a desperate act of self-defense, Henry strikes the man down with a rock. "Was this the turning point?" Holly wonders aloud. The answer is affirmative, but the act wasn't just a defensive killing.

Like many elements of the final season, the significance of the encounter is detailed in the theatrical production The First Shadow.

An Interdimensional Incident and Secret Science

*The First Shadow* opens with the legendary naval test, which transported a U.S. Navy ship into a dimension known as the Abyss. It faced creatures, and the only one to return was the captain, who came back in a unresponsive state with an different blood composition.

That survivor's offspring, the future Dr. Brenner, attempted to recreate this phenomenon in Nevada. One of his scientists pilfered lab samples to hand over to the Russian agents, who were keen to start their own interdimensional projects. The man in the mine shaft is the one who stole the materials.

The Briefcase's Contents

Considering what is known about his research, the container would assuredly have samples of Captain Brenner's infected blood. In the scene, Henry is wounded and bleeding. Exposure likely occurred upon handling the contents, which triggered the awakening of his powers—abilities he would later pass on to the test subjects under Brenner's care.

Another possibility, the case could have held dark matter that eventually found its way to the Hawkins lab, where it helps stabilize the Upside Down. The stage play explains that young Henry somehow wound up in the Abyss, returning hours later with a new blood type and personality. Throughout the play, he struggles with the control of a malevolent force, similar to how Will Byers was controlled by the entity in an earlier season.

The Power of Fear

His lasting fear associated with the mine shows how profoundly traumatic the encounter was for him. Even as he controls the army of monsters and seeks to merge the Abyss into Hawkins, a piece of the scared boy remains. Fear is his tool, and the show is setting up a climactic battle between the monster and Will, who has overcome his own deepest fears to fortify himself.

Will's growth has neutralized a key tactic of Vecna. More importantly, Will now understands what his enemy truly fears, which could provide a decisive edge in the series finale to come.
