The Latest Mayhem Mounts Drop Brings Forth a Stunningly Wild Fresh Weapon to Your World

The winter content update for Minecraft has arrived — and it features the first new weapon added to the game since the heavy club made its debut. The lance is now available and it has the potential to alter your gameplay in Minecraft, particularly when you thrive on pandemonium.

An Armament Designed for Chaotic Rides

The Mounts of Mayhem drop also introduces several new features and enhancements related to riding animals in the game. That driving concept made the spear the natural choice for this update, as the development team had long felt it was time for a fresh combat tool.

"We knew initially that we aimed for a fresh armament that would provide extended reach, and we wanted it to be fighting from atop a creature," stated a senior product manager. "We experimented with a number of concepts, but the spear was the one that both felt great when we ran our trials and also looked good for the intended purpose."

If you're curious whether mounted combat means you can tilt at your companions on steeds, the answer is a resounding yes. In fact, there's even an attack excellently designed for it.

"[Jousting on horses is a major functions for the spear, and it's incredibly enjoyable," the lead says. "The spear has a pair of offensive moves: You have the thrust, where you simply impale your enemy. But you also have a sprinting strike where you lower your spear and inflict increased harm [with] the more speed and velocity you have. So [it’s] tailor-made for jousting on horses."

Sky-High Chaos and Underwater Adventures

The chaotic fun isn't limited to there, though. If you're far enough into the game that you've explored The End, the developers have an truly outlandish idea. "If you are very late, [spears are] excellent for strapping on the wings and flying forth and creating genuine chaos," she suggests.

In other words: Jousting in the clouds is now possible, and it deserves to be an competitive event right away.

Another key feature in this latest drop is the Nautilus. This underwater creature, which is based on the seashells players have gathered for years, can be tamed and mounted for submarine exploration. Not only will it carry you through the water faster than swimming, it'll also conserve your oxygen levels, so there's no requirement to surface for oxygen.

The remaining new features are primarily things that want to kill you, as is the tradition of Minecraft. Unsurprisingly, there's also a undead nautilus spawning in the water, sometimes with a zombie villager on its back. If you succeed in defeat the Drowned, though, you can claim the zombie Nautilus — or the standard version, for that matter — with a puffer fish.

"We've pondered this problem on and off, and again, like with the spear and [adding] more mounts, it felt like the right time to also unveil something for aquatic environments," the lead clarifies. "For the Nautilus specifically, we had a few different ideas for sea mounts that we wanted to experiment with, but the Nautilus design sketches looked impressive, and we have the link to the Nautilus shell that was found within the game."

She also notes that there are actually a pair of variants of undead nautilus: regular and coral zombie Nautilus. "[The variants] provide diversity to what you discover underwater."

Parched Perils & Overdue Enhancements

Further inclusions include the Parched, desert-exclusive undead archers that can withstand the sun, which means there's no escape from them if you find yourself in that biome. Sometimes you'll see them on zombified camels, another fresh creature. These passive, zombified camels have an excellent design that sees their bones protruding. The same goes for zombie horses, who have a similar exposed-rib aesthetic and can sometimes be spawned in the darkness with a spear-carrying zombie on their back.

The remaining updates on the drop's list are refinements, including some much-anticipated tweaks to riding horses. Now, you can ford rivers and lakes while riding a horse. Also, netherite horse armor is now obtainable at the crafting table, so you can provide your steed with the best defense it is worthy of.

A Spicy Send-Off for the Year

Overall, the last content update of the year is a notable addition. The spear alone — and the mayhem it enables — would have felt like a major improvement. Throw in the Nautilus, and additional creatures trying to kill you, and Minecraft's definitely getting a touch more chaotic.

The Mayhem Mounts update is live for Java and Bedrock editions of Minecraft.
