The beloved crime series Line of Duty is officially returning for its 7th season, confirmed by the broadcaster.

An upcoming six-part series created by Jed Mercurio starts production in Northern Ireland in the coming months, according to the network.

The actress expressed excitement about the comeback, stating she was "thrilled" about the show's renewal. Her co-star remarked, "What a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be reuniting together next year."

The last season wrapped up in 2021 with a finale that attracted more than 17 million audience members. Rumors about a potential return have been widespread ever since, but confirmation only arrived this week.

New Challenges for The Team

The seventh season will open with the anti-corruption unit no longer existing and renamed as the new police oversight body, as revealed by production details.

Martin Compston's character, Kate Fleming, and Ted Hastings remain working to combat misconduct within the law enforcement.

The team's mission "has never been more difficult", and under these circumstances, the trio are assigned their "most sensitive case so far."

Fresh Face and Complex Case

An additional officer, Det Insp Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charming officer celebrated for takedowns of criminal networks, faces allegations of misusing his authority to become a offender.

However, this investigation could be a intentional diversion from a larger danger still active in the background, the teaser suggested.

Speaking about the renewal, the creator said: "Everyone involved are deeply thankful to the show's fans."

"It's an honor to have had countless followers watch the ups and downs of AC-12 over multiple series and we couldn't be more delighted to be coming back for a new installment."

He added: "Misconduct in the UK was thought to be over while the series was not airing, so I've been compelled to use my creativity."

Cast Reactions

Martin Compston described appearing in the series as "the role of a career".

"Beyond the program's popularity but the colleagues I've collaborated with I now call some of my closest friends."

"I'm excited to wear the uniform again and reunite with everyone," he said.

The Nottingham-born actress remarked: "It goes without saying I'm so excited the show is back! Eager to work with the creator, Compston and Adrian again. Belfast, we'll see you soon!"

Adrian Dunbar noted: "While anticipating the AC-12 days of Christmas, what a joy it is to know that the central trio will be working together next year."

"Delighted with the news and looking forward to those unexpected plot developments."

Show History

Line of Duty launched in 2012 and became a highly successful TV dramas of the past ten years, featuring notable actors such as Kelly Macdonald.

The BBC haven't revealed exactly the upcoming series will hit screens.

The finale of series six brought the extended plot about the search for kingpin known as "the mysterious H" to a conclusion, and the creative team said at the time there were no plans for additional seasons.

Nevertheless, the network confirmed on this week that a new season is now being produced.
