The Generosity of People We Don't Know: How a Gentleman I Had Just Met Supported Me Obtain the Position That Transformed My Existence

During the final years of the 1980s, I set out on a low-cost journey to the European continent with a friend. Because my friend was considering enrolling in graduate studies in New York, we had booked a 14-day stopover there before heading to London.

We got to the postgrad residence, a large ten-floor structure on the Upper West Side known as International House. After dropping our bags, we made our way to the dining hall, where we grabbed food, sat down, and engaged in conversation with other diners.

Beside me was an individual of Iraqi origin studying engineering at a prestigious New York university. He inquired what I my profession was, and I explained that I had just graduated with a science degree and had been performing experiments using an electron microscope.

He pointed out that there was an research lab at the institution – right next door to the engineering department, which was why he was aware of it. He proposed that I should apply for a job with them. I laughed it off, saying that I was heading off to Europe and, even more importantly, I didn’t have a US visa.

A day later I ventured out, coming back to the dining hall that after dark. The Iraqi student came up to me and told me that he had arranged an interview for me with the head of the electron microscope unit at Columbia. Since he had gone to the trouble, I attended the interview – but right away told my host that I didn’t have a visa, so I was unable to accept the role.

In typical New York fashion – a metropolis where opportunities abound – she said: “That can be arranged. When can you start?” I didn't board the aircraft to London.

I was employed there for 36 months. One of the benefits was that I also received free tuition at Columbia, and I used the opportunity to finish a master’s of international affairs.

We didn't cross paths after that and I am unaware of his identity, but his selfless gesture changed my life in multiple respects. I would never have had the confidence or nerve to contact anyone at an Ivy League university and request employment. Moreover, I had always wanted to study abroad, but could never have afforded it without that free tuition.

What's more, that role at the university paved the way for a role in Europe where I encountered my handsome spouse from France, with whom I currently share four wonderful sons and daughters. This was a pivotal life event. That benevolent individual changed my trajectory in life, and I’m forever grateful.
