The City of Seattle's LGBTQ+ Pride to Proceed for World Cup In Spite of Formal Protests by Iran and Egypt
Plans for LGBTQ+ rights celebrations in Seattle during next summer’s FIFA World Cup tournament will continue as scheduled, despite Iranian and Egyptian football federations raised strong concerns about a scheduled “Pride Match.”
Venue Regulations Alongside External Festivities
Local organizers stated clearly they are “moving forward as planned” with Pride activities in the city center. This coincides with the tournament group match between Egypt and Iran on June 26th. Furthermore, FIFA will permit rainbow flags inside the match venue.
“In our role as hosts, our primary task is to prepare our city to welcome visitors for the matches and manage the fan activities outside of the match venue,” said a committee representative.
Cultural Background of Objections
Same-sex relations are criminalized in Iran, and in Egypt, morality laws are frequently employed to prosecute individuals from the LGBTQ+ community. Egypt's football association stated it refused to be associated with events that “fundamentally oppose the social, religious and cultural values … in Arab and Islamic societies.” Similarly, the head of Iran's soccer body publicly registered “its opposition against the issue.”
The Governing Body's Position Regarding Symbols
Fifa maintains full authority of stadiums on matchdays. Although it prohibits political signage with overtly political content, it permits flags expressing “social and sporting symbols,” a category which includes the rainbow flag. This policy was applied at the most recent World Cup in Qatar and was reaffirmed after incidents of authorities confiscating flags.
