New Year's Celebrants Told to Dress Warmly with Snow Forecast Throughout the UK
Weather experts are saying a frosty commencement to the new year, with snowfall likely throughout a lot of the UK. Revelers are being urged to wrap up as near-freezing temperatures are expected for New Year's Eve.
Celebratory Events Continue In Spite of Forecasts
Edinburgh's iconic Hogmanay festivities are planned to go ahead, unlike last year's cancellation. This comes despite advisories for snow over northern Scotland.
"An icy New Year's Eve evening for those who are celebrating, so additional clothing will be necessary," stated the weather service.
Celebrations Under Clear but Frosty Skies
In other parts of the UK, the weather is expected to be suited to fireworks shows, with no rain and clear skies. Temperatures are expected to be cold, so extra layers essential, according to forecasters.
In more northern areas, conditions will be cloudier, but this is unlikely to hamper visibility for viewing fireworks. "It won't be low cloud, mist or murk, so you ought to be able to see fireworks, just not stars," remarked one forecaster.
Broad Weather Alerts for Friday
Moving into Friday, snow alerts have been issued across Northern Ireland and extending from Wales, through the north-west, the West Midlands and reaching London and most of the south-east of England.

- Hold-ups and call-offs are expected on public transport.
Temperatures Forecast to Fall Even More
Going into the new year, it will be "chilly no matter where you are," stated forecaster Simon Partridge. Conditions are forecast to fall even more as wintry showers and strong winds are expected to hit the north of the country.
About 10cm of snow is expected to have built up in some areas by Friday morning, reaching up to 30cm on the most elevated routes and peaks.
Health Warnings Released
At the same time, serious cold weather health warnings have been issued for the north-east and north-west of England. These are expected to continue until noon on 5 January, with readings forecast to fall to between 3C and 5C.
Officials said this indicated the weather could to trigger significant impacts across medical and care provision. This involves a likely increase in the fatality numbers among those with health conditions or those aged 65 or over.
The guidance for all is clear: to see the new year in good health, dressing for the cold is completely essential.
