Boxing is in a notable downturn this year, with a scarcity of big events and considerably fewer thrilling fights than typical. The possibility of a serious and intriguing heavyweight contest between Joseph Parker and Fabio Wardley at the London's O₂ Arena brings a measure of relief to the challenged industry. The victor will with high probability face champion Oleksandr Usyk next year. In opposition, the loser is likely to lament the inevitable erosion of their earned accolades.

The quiet attraction of the two boxers is amplified by the fact that they now stand on the verge of a world title shot. Yet neither is invincible. This is Parker’s 40th fight and, besides three setbacks, he has been knocked down on several occasions by different opponents. He always gets up but Wardley punches with greater force than any fighter he's fought – with the exclusion of Wilder who appeared diminished of a knockout artist when Parker achieved a clear unanimous decision in December 2023.

Wardley, previously a white-collar fighter, who only took up boxing when he was 20, had no amateur experience and has always had to overcome doubts about his comparatively limited skills. But he is also on the verge to a world title challenge.

“This is the most significant fight, currently, in the heavyweight category. These two guys have stepped up when neither of them had to agree to this match. Parker is the interim WBO titleholder and they have already ordered Usyk to fight him, but he was injured. Parker wants to fight anyway.

“Fabio is also in a fantastic position and he only had to wait for his opportunity. He said ‘No, thanks.’ He wanted to fight – and with Parker because it offers him an opportunity to accelerate his path.”

The View from Parker

Parker, aging 34 soon, said: “This is do or die. I am not focused on a loss. I respect my opponent and his accomplishments and how he has prepared for this fight. But I am on a superior tier and I am planning to demonstrate it on fight night.”

Wardley's Stance

Wardley turns 31 in December, and he said: “This is a monumental event for the pair of us. It is undoubtedly the largest contest of my career and the greatest challenge I've faced. But each time I rise to the occasion I rise to the occasion. This Saturday will be no different. The separation between where Joe is and where people think I am has been a common theme throughout my career.

“He has been going around the block for a considerable period, with a many bouts on his record. Certainly not is he an senior boxer but he has been in the sport for a while and had several tough bouts. I've also endured brutal fights and I know they put miles on the clock. He has been in a lot more of those compared to me.”

But the general belief is that Parker will be too experienced, and too skilful, for his opponent. He should win a bruising battle with the belief that he is next in line for a title shot against Usyk – currently the top heavyweight globally by a clear gap.
