We are verifying video footage and photographs circulated this morning that purport to show the aftermath of a reported vehicle-borne explosive explosion that Russian officials say killed a senior military officer in Moscow.
Officials in Russia confirmed that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was in the vehicle that exploded and that he later died of his wounds. A probe is currently ongoing.
The initial step to check the location of where the pictures were from was based on social media reports saying the explosion occurred on Yasenevaya Street in the southern part of the capital city of Russia.
Our analysis employed street-view imagery on Google Maps and the local mapping service Yandex Maps to corroborate the distinctive yellow hue of a nearby apartment building seen in the footage.
Locating other buildings, streetlights and the road configuration confirmed the exact location the pictures were taken.
Additionally, we verified that the video clips were new and that the visuals had not been digital alteration.
