Doris Included in Irish Team While McCarthy Left Out
Newly reappointed manager the Ireland coach has included captain Doris in his Ireland roster for the autumn matches, however lock McCarthy is absent.
The captain, absent from play since undergoing shoulder surgery in the start of May, recently returned to provincial training, but it remains unclear if he will be fit to play against New Zealand in the US on 1 November.
Second row Joe McCarthy, however, did not make the cut after failing to recover from the foot issue he sustained during the opening British and Irish Lions match against the Wallabies in the summer.
Ulster player Cormac Izuchukwu and southern province winger Calvin Nash also miss out due to injury, and number 15 Hugo Keenan had already been ruled out after undergoing a hip operation following the Lions tour.
Dublin province prop Paddy McCarthy - Joe's younger brother - is the sole uncapped player in the 34-man squad, however the Irish Rugby Football Union states uncapped provincial pair Edwin Edogbo and Brian Gleeson and previously capped western province wing Shayne Bolton will travel to the US as "cover".
After playing the New Zealand at Soldier Field in a rematch of their previous encounter, the team will play the Brave Blossoms, the Wallabies and world title holders South Africa in Dublin.
"It's an exciting group to the squad and there's an opportunity for the veteran players and for those who made their debuts on the summer tour to Georgia and Portugal," commented Farrell, who returns to national team duties after taking a sabbatical to lead the British and Irish Lions to Australia.
In a mostly experienced squad, Leinster's Sam Prendergast and Munster's Jack Crowley will once again compete for the starting number 10 position. The fly-half role is still available, as Prendergast and Crowley set to face off for the first occasion in Saturday's URC game at Croke Park.
Ciaran Frawley is the additional fly-half selected with the coach opting against selecting the province's Harry Byrne.
At number 9, Farrell has picked Lions tourist Jamison Gibson-Park and Craig Casey, who captained the national side to the summer Test wins over the Lelos and the Lobos. There is also a return for Connacht's Blade, chosen to teammate Murphy.
Henshaw, Aki, Ringrose and McCloskey form an veteran group of midfield choices. Osborne is a further choice in the midfield, but the youngster is additionally a frontrunner to deputise for Keenan at full-back.
Outside backs James Lowe, Mack Hansen, Tommy O'Brien and Jacob Stockdale are included. O'Brien impressed on his national team debut over the summer with a brace each in the victories over the Lelos and the Lobos.
Paddy McCarthy is the only fresh addition in the Ireland pack. The front rower has started a couple of Leinster's three league games this season and played in Ireland A's loss by England in the English city earlier this year.
McCarthy was selected in interim boss Paul O'Connell's summer selection, but did not receive a international appearance.
Munster lock Ahern, who earned his debut appearances in those Tests, is retained, and veteran Ulster second row Iain Henderson returns after missing the summer tour.
Conan, who started all three Lions Tests over the summer, is set to cover for Doris if the captain fails to recover fitness soon enough to face New Zealand.
The national team will meet in the capital on the start of the week before flying to Chicago on the following day.
