Both Deceased Students Named in the Ivy League School Attack as Law Enforcement Continue Hunt for Killer.
Two students who died in the recent mass shooting on the university campus had tributes paid to them on Monday – as a manhunt for their shooter continued following the discharge by local law enforcement of the only individual of interest in the case.
Remembering Ella Cook
Ella Cook, a second-year student from Alabama, was remembered as “an incredible, grounded, faithful, bright light”, according to the Birmingham's Cathedral Church of the Advent, which paid tribute to her at a gathering on Sunday.
Her role included the vice-presidency of Brown’s chapter of College Republicans of America, the group said. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt also shared sympathies publicly, saying in part: “Words cannot express. Remembering her loved ones and companions, particularly her mother and father.”
An International Student
The other deceased individual was an Uzbek national named MukhammadAziz Umurzokov, from Uzbekistan in his first year of studies at the renowned school, his family confirmed.
His name was confirmed by the Uzbek Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
“He was incredibly kind, funny, and smart. He harbored grand aspirations of entering the field of neurosurgery and assisting patients,” Samira Umurzokova, his sister said in a online post.
Details of the Attack
An additional nine individuals were hurt in the weekend shooting in the school of engineering of Brown’s grounds in Providence, during the institution's end-of-term tests.
Authorities said on Sunday evening that a man aged 24 arrested in a raid at a hotel about approximately 17 miles from the scene earlier in the day was released from custody.
“A perpetrator remains free,” said Rhode Island’s attorney general, Peter Neronha.
He added, “Sometimes you head in one direction, and then you have to regroup and go in another, and that is the current situation over the last approximately one day.”
Ongoing Concerns
The city's mayor, Brett Smiley, acknowledged: “It is expected to provoke fresh anxiety for our public”.
The assailant opened fire inside a classroom in the building on over the weekend, shooting over four dozen bullets from a 9mm pistol, a law enforcement official reported to the Associated Press.
Police that raided the lodging recovered two firearms and two ammunition clips when the individual was taken into custody, according to reports.
Condition of the Injured
Among those wounded, one student was allowed to go home, stated Brown’s president, Christina Paxson. Seven more were in critical but stable condition, and another was critically ill, authorities stated on Sunday.
Durham Academy, a independent school in North Carolina, said Kendall Turner, Kendall Turner, was one of the critically injured.
More Condolences
Cook was honored at a religious service in Birmingham on Sunday. A pastor commented, “She shone as a remarkable, stable, devout beacon not only here growing up... but at the university she was an incredible light in that institution as well.”
Martin Bertao, Martin Bertao, released remarks from the club. “Ella was recognized for her bold, brave, and kind heart as she aided her club and peers,” he said.
Jonathan Henick, Jonathan Henick, said he was “deeply saddened” by the student's death in a message. “We offer our heartfelt sympathies to Mr Umurzokov’s family, loved ones, and peers and lament the passing of his bright future.”

Saturday’s killings at Brown, the nation’s seventh-oldest higher education institution with about 7,300 undergraduate and postgraduate students, happened during one of at least 392 mass shootings reported in the US so far in this year, according to records.
