Biden Bowl, Anyone? Italy's PM to Auction Off World Leaders' Gifts for Charity

Passing on undesired offerings could be viewed as a little discourteous – except if it's done in the proper manner.

A Charitable Clear-Out

The Italian premier, Giorgia Meloni, is set to sell around 270 presents received by her by international figures during her travels. This unusual assortment reportedly features gifts including a miniature chainsaw-holding statuette of Argentinian president Javier Milei and a pair of blue python skin shoes with gold heels.

These items, combined, are valued at around €800,000. They are scheduled to be auctioned off to the highest bidder by a Rome-based auction firm. An exact timeline is yet to be set, although the goal is to conduct the sale before Christmas, with the revenue donated to non-profit organizations.

Storage Room Treasures

The presents are said to be kept in a secure area on the upper level of the government headquarters. It has been reported that Meloni furthermore planning to auction off gifts received by her predecessors that have been gathering dust indefinitely.

The detailed catalog has not yet been officially released, but partial details emerged earlier this year when a detailed register of all declared gifts was submitted to lawmakers. The discussion centered on if a legal value limit was being honored. According to regulation, a prime minister is not permitted to keep presents worth more than €300.

An International Array of Gifts

The collection includes:

  • A scarf from the leader of Albania, allegedly given to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
  • A customary Indian garment from India's prime minister.
  • A box of jewellery from the president of Slovakia.
  • A fine china tea service and a selection of wines from the Hungarian prime minister.
  • A ceramic bowl from the ex-American leader.
  • A tablet from the leader of Ukraine.
  • Watercolour paintings from Moldova.
  • Additional objects including cosmetics, a board, and numerous carpets received during trips to Libya and other Arab nations.
"Maybe the most unusual gifts included the statuette from Milei and the exotic footwear," reports suggest.

Diplomatic Backdrop

Supporters have applauded Meloni, particularly from within her party, with building relationships with international counterparts and re-establishing Italy as a key protagonist on the international platform once again.

This unique auction represents a unconventional way to manage the protocol gifts that build up during a political career.
