Alphabet Commits $15bn for Constructing AI Computing Facility in the Indian Subcontinent
Google's parent company Alphabet Inc. plans to commit $15 billion to establish an AI computing facility in the state of Andhra Pradesh in southern India.
The infrastructure, which will be set up in the coastal city of the city of Visakhapatnam, will become a segment of Google's international system of AI centres spread across a dozen nations.
"This represents the biggest AI facility that we plan to invest in across the globe, excluding the United States of America," Thomas Kurien stated at an gathering in Delhi, the national capital recently, adding that the financial commitment will be spread over the next five years.
The announcement occurs when American President Donald Trump has been asking American companies to prioritise domestic investment.
The Expanding Position of India in Artificial Intelligence Infrastructure
The nation has emerged as a prime location for AI data centers. The country's low data costs and rapidly growing online population have established it as a center for AI and cloud growth for major tech firms.
"This center will introduce our pioneering tech solutions to companies and individuals in the country, accelerating AI innovation and promoting progress across the country," stated Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai.
Initiative Particulars
A formal agreement to finalise the project will be signed this Tuesday, state authorities announced.
"It constitutes a major step forward for our state's digital future, progress, and worldwide position," remarked the state's technology minister Nara Lokesh.
This initiative will combine cloud and AI infrastructure with sustainable power solutions and an expanded fibre-optic network.
Andhra Pradesh's Data Center Vision
The project forms part of the Andhra Pradesh government's plan to establish six gigawatts of computing facility capacity by the year 2029.
Computing facilities are actual buildings that accommodate the computer and network hardware that organizations use to collect, process, store, and distribute data.
They contain hosting servers, storage systems and networking hardware like network routers and security firewalls, combined with the essential electricity and temperature control systems to operate them.
Financial Attractions
In Andhra Pradesh, the state authorities has been providing discounted land and energy to entice worldwide funders.
Sector Expansion
The nation's data center sector has expanded quickly in the recent half-decade, crossing the one gigawatt capacity threshold in 2024 and nearly tripling its capability from 2019.
