A Tooth Fairy Tale Review: Cartoon Adventure with a Sprinkling of Family-Friendly Preteen Love Story
Throughout this animated adventure aimed at tweens, the world of fairies is dedicated to collecting teeth from sleeping children and leaving treasure under their pillows. Skateboarding youthful nonconformist fairy Van (voiced by Booboo Stewart) shows little enthusiasm about spending his future to gathering baby teeth—a sentiment that’s completely understandable. He is just slightly more curious about the underlying economics behind it all: the fairies hand over the molars to mysterious goblins, who provide metal in exchange. But Van’s curiosity is piqued when he spots a goblin (voiced by Larkin Bell), who proves to be far from the ugly creature he expected.
A Forbidden Connection and Shared Threat
Everything is prepared for an adventure with a gentle touch of young love (even though it remains very much suitable for younger kids). The goblin and fairy groups are estranged from one another, and nothing fuels the excitement of secrecy to bring people as one. The two species as seen here are incredibly similar, yet each holds biased views about the opposite side. The fairies are supposed to be self-centered sorts, prone to taking anything they want, while goblins are allegedly dim-witted, foul-smelling, and backward, but are actually bright and advanced in technology.
Naturally, this scenario requires a shared foe to unite against, and this is duly provided in the form of some nasty spiders, with voices by Jon Lovitz and Fran Drescher. There’s no beating about the bush with these guys: they want to eat the fairies and goblins, and they make for fairly bloodthirsty, if not especially competent, villains.
Ideal Viewers and Final Thoughts
There aren’t all that many animated films aimed at the viewer group that is beginning to have first crushes, but aren’t yet old enough for the content teenagers view these days in lieu of popular teen sagas. If your child is in the right age bracket, this is unlikely to become their new favorite movie, but you could do worse.
The Tooth Fairy Story releases in movie theaters in Scotland from 10 October and across the United Kingdom from 24 October.
