A Minimalist Statement or Just Pantonedeaf? The Hue Named 'Cloud Dancer' Chosen as Pantone's 2026 Colour.

Hi there! I can't wait to discover what color will define 2026. What's the scoop?

Brace yourself, because every year for over two decades, Pantone selects a defining hue. This pick seeks to represent the current cultural mood—influencing everything from how we feel and what we wear to how we design our living spaces. Last year's hue was the deep beige "Mocha Mousse," preceded by the soft and warm "a delicate peach tone."

The new choice, though, is even more puzzling. It is "a billowy white," which Pantone calls a "ethereal and neutral white."

Laurie Pressman, vice-president of the Pantone Color Institute, commented that it is "a key structural color … permitting all colors to stand out."

Hmm, Cloud Dancer… seriously, white? Are they joking? Can white truly be considered a distinct hue?

Can you even describe the shade of milk? A blank page? Even though people often think of white as a color, all color is fundamentally a perception of light wavelengths. It's present in a box of crayons, so I'd argue the answer is yes.

If Pantone is being provocative is trickier to figure out. According to their release, Cloud Dancer pairs effortlessly with other colors, avoids sensory overload, declares simplicity, and projects quiet sophistication.

Feedback online, however, has been less complimentary. Several voices have suggested Pantone of being completely "Pantonedeaf." Fashion and trend forecaster Mandy Lee described it as "underwhelming." Critics have likened it to subtle advocacy of controversial ideas seen in recent advertising.

Right, it's to be hoped they're happily ignorant that now is a sensitive time to be pointedly celebrating whiteness... Anyway, how can a regular person who doesn't follow a catwalk use this information in my world? I just painted my kitchen ceiling white, is that enough?

That definitely qualifies. This applies equally to your earbuds, bathtub, or favorite mug.

It's interesting you mention runways, since many recent shows have been vibrantly colorful, featuring plant-based fabrics on the stage.

All-white outfits were present, as always, in designer collections—from elegant blouses to collared dresses. High-profile figures have also been spotted in monochromatic white ensembles at prestigious shows.

On the bright side is: you likely already own items in this "discreet" chosen hue. According to Pressman, Cloud Dancer "signifies a more sustainable choice for the eco-conscious," which could mean avoiding the need to purchase anything new at all.

FINALLY, a fashion trend for the inherently lazy. An empty canvas, so to speak. A cocoon of monochromatic zen within the clutter. Okay, I'm on board. Will you be creating a monochrome palette for your wardrobe?

Definitely not. Attempting to clean tomato sauce stains from a white shirt? I'm not seeking more laundry disasters in 2026.

I do have a pair of formerly pristine Birkenstocks, and such staples never go out of style.
